My VSS 2024 abstract is now published in Journal of Vision: Spatial scrambling in human vision: investigating efficiency for discriminating scrambled letters using convolutional neural networks and confusion matrices.

This abstract compares human performance on spatially scrambled letters with both template-style and convolutional neural network observers. The results suggest CNNs better capture human strategies for identifying scrambled letters than a simple template-matching observer, and they distinguish the perceptual consequences of subcortical and cortical scrambling.
